Safe Water for Bughungu Primary School: Project Update and Matching Gift Opportunity
Over the past month, the Bughungu water collection project has moved from a dream to a fully-mobilized community effort. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters and the dedication of local engineers, teachers, parents, and volunteers, we are now several weeks closer to bringing safe, reliable drinking water to more than 900 children at Bughungu Primary School.
Why This Matters
The recent typhoid outbreak at the school underscored what the community has known for years: safe drinking water is not optional. It is foundational to health, learning, and dignity. This project will:
- Reduce waterborne disease
- Improve school attendance
- Promote sanitation
- Lighten the workload for children, especially girls
- Provide easier access to fresh water for the entire community
Where the Project Stands Today
- Engineering assessments are complete. Local water engineers have confirmed a viable mountain spring source with strong year-round flow.
- Land permissions have been secured. All landowners along the pipeline route have signed consent documents, ensuring a smooth and community-supported installation.
- System design is finalized. The gravity-flow system includes source protection, sedimentation, purification, a main storage tank, a break-pressure tank, and tap stands for both the school and surrounding households.
With these pieces in place, work started in mid-April. The crew has completed site prep and construction of the source tank and the main tank. Rolls of HDPE pipe have been transported to the site. Local residents who live along the line are digging trenches where the pipe will be laid.
Unfortunately, this is where the project will pause until additional funds can be raised.
