A Sustainable Water Lifeline for a Mountain Community
The Bughungu Gravity‑Flow Water System brings safe, reliable water to Bughungu Primary School by harnessing the natural elevation of the Rwenzori foothills. Built on proven rural engineering principles and shaped through local leadership, the system delivers clean water without pumps, electricity, or complex maintenance, this is a long‑term solution designed for the realities of life in the Bughungu community.
Beginning at a protected mountain spring nearly 3 kilometres above the school, water travels through a high‑pressure pipeline to a series of storage and safety tanks. These tanks regulate flow, protect the system from pressure damage, and ensure consistent supply throughout the day. At the school, water enters a dedicated storage tank and passes through a purification unit before reaching taps used by students, teachers, and community members.
This project strengthens health, learning, and dignity. Children no longer walk long distances for water. Teachers can rely on clean water for cooking and sanitation. The school can maintain safe hygiene practices year‑round.
