Thank you for your continued support and care for the communities we serve in Kyarumba and Muhokya. I’m writing to provide a clear update on the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and to explain what it means for our work in Western Uganda.
As you may have seen in recent reports, the outbreak in Ituri Province, DRC, is ongoing. While Kyarumba and Muhokya are geographically close to the Congo border, it is important to emphasize that there are currently no confirmed cases in these communities. Uganda’s Ministry of Health remains on high alert, and cross-border surveillance has been strengthened.
Our priority is the safety of our directors in Uganda — Teddy, Joseph, and Chris — and the communities we serve. We are closely monitoring updates from the Ministry of Health, WHO, and district health offices, and reinforcing hygiene and hand-washing protocols at all project sites. Our directors and community partners there have accurate information on symptoms, reporting procedures, and prevention.
It’s important to note that Ebola does not spread through casual contact or through the air. Transmission requires direct contact with bodily fluids of a symptomatic person.
With strong surveillance and early reporting systems in place, Uganda has a strong track record of containing imported cases quickly.
At this time, our programs in Kyarumba and Muhokya continue safely. Our food security and school lunch programs at Musasa and Bughungu Primary Schools are continuing without interruption. Our work on the water collection and purification system for Bughungu Primary School will be intensified, since the need for fresh, readily available water has become even more critical.
We remain vigilant, prepared, and in close communication with health authorities. Should the situation change, we will update you immediately.
