While the Kyarumba valley is dealing with destructive flooding, the village of Muhokya, on higher ground, has been spared the worst of this rainy season, so it’s been business as usual, except for the mud.

The 15 students who began their training at the Carpentry Centre in January have come to the end of their training and took their final exam on Thursday.  The final exam consists of having to build a stool.  They are given a plan, and six hours to complete the task.   No nails, no power tools.  If a board breaks, they must improvise, as no replacement parts are provided.  We should know the results in the next few days.

Three young women initially registered for this training, but only one was able to make it through to the end.  Family pressures to conform to gender norms can be quite overwhelming for these kids.

  1. It is good there is that training in carpentry mainly offered to young ladies. You say 15 trainees, were enrolled for this training and out of that only one was able to accomplish the training. The possible factors which could have affected their training are;
    1. bad peer groups
    2. low attitude towards such training
    3 committing daily to and from home.
    However to avoid such challenges it could be better to accommodate such trainees at school so that they can avoid such challenges.
    And also there may be need for sensitization program to such trainees on the values of such trainings
